I am operating a small business, well two in fact, from my dinning room at home, we use a Windows home server (WHS) ( Tranquil PC ) and have five users with laptops all with the WHS connector software installed

I have installed Microsoft Office Accounting 2008 Pro (MOA2008) on the WHS by logging into the remote desktop.

I have set the various Multi user access permissions on the WHS installation of MOA2008 and saved the company files (.sbc) on a shared folder for all the users to access.

For each laptop I have installed the client and all works well, the users open the respective company file in the shared folder and have appropriate access to the data.

I have also a WHS set up at home and my connector software is associated with my home installation, I have this weekend installed the Release candidate of Win 7 on my laptop taking advantage of the long bank holiday weekend (here in the UK) to consolidate all my backups and old files on my new clean installation. (Whilst at the same time I have changed my login user name)

I created a corresponding user on the WHS and set the necessary permissions, also mounting network drives with the appropriate user names and passwords etc. I can open and save all my files on the network without problem.

However having installed MOA2008 I can no longer access any of the company files.

After wasting a lot of time looking into various issues around SQL and permissions, the solution was quite simple.

I uninstalled the version of the WHS connector software associated with my home network and then installed the connector software from the WHS work server. I can now access all the company data.

Better still, I have now un-installed the connector software associated with the company WHS server and re-installed the connector software from my home server and I can still access all the company files with MOA2008 on the company server.

I guess the connector software must set up additional security setting that aren’t exposed any ware within the WHS configuration

Fortunately there is a copy of the latest current copy on the home server, but it is not easy to find.

Point your web browser to your server in my case the server name is the default “server”

http://server:55000

And this will take you to a web page on the server with the latest version.

I have been playing around this weekend with Windows 7 and installing my usual app’s, looking to see if anything breaks, and so determining if I should install it on my main production laptop.

Everything I have thrown at it has worked fine, the only issue I had was with Outlook 2007 and my hosted exchange provider Sherweb.

Usually I log into my Sherweb account with my email address and password, however when I use those credentials during set up Outlook 2007 behaves as though the credentials are wrong somehow.

For some reason in Windows 7 during the Outlook 2007 set up you have to use the credentials in the format of ” DOMAIN\USER NAME “

The domain portion for Sherweb is simpley the Internet domain ” ihostexchange.net “

The user name can be found by logging into you account at admin.ihostexchange.net and looking for the corresponding SAM user name for the user.

So you logon should be something along the lines of

ihostexchange.net\john.smith_pc-fs_co with your usual password.

After that all is fine.

Hope this helps

David

UPDATE: Sherweb have now published an FAQ for their customers http://support.sherweb.com/showfaq.php?idarticle=198&idcat=1

For some months now, I have had a persistent problem with my wife’s laptop, she has a HP Pavilion dv6000 (dv6231eu), which came with XP media centre, earlier this year I upgraded the OS to Vista Ultimate, and I used the Vista drivers downloaded from HPs Support Web site. Since then, she has had several BSOD much to MY pain, to make things more difficult, the BSOD screen was blurred and I couldn’t read the message.

After lots of googling, I suspected the problem was with one of the Nvidia driver, I downloaded and installed several different drivers from both Nvidia and HPs web site, and no matter which version I used, the problem was still there.

In the meantime I had installed Microsoft’s Windows Home Server on a re-purposed pc at Home, I installed the accompanying connector software on each machine in the house (4 laptops and 1 media centre pc, all running vista). One of the great features of windows home server is the automated backup of the client machines on the network. after midnight, each night, each machine in turn does a differential bit level backup to the server of each volume on the client pc, usually only taking a few minutes, however in the case of my wife’s laptop, whilst the main system volume C: backed up fine, the machine would BSOD every time is tried to back up the HP recovery volume D: now I had some consistency!.

After some more thought and further looking around I found these great instructions for debugging the MEMORY.DMP file on her PC. After installing the debugger and the symbol set. I had the name of the suspect driver nvstor32.sys

Using the device manager I selected the IDE/SATA devices and located the driver, I first tried rolling back the driver, restarting the machine, backing up with WHS backup and bang, another BSOD. I had finally given up with the Nvidia drives, and decided to revert to a generic windows driver.

So from the driver in the device manager I selected ["update driver software"], ["browse my computer"], ["Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"] I then selected the “standard dual channel PCI IDE Controller” driver by Microsoft, this is dated 21st June 2006, driver version 6.06000.16386 rather that the Nvidia driver, with this installed I restarted the system.

I ran the backup again, and …. no BSOD, at last!, lets see if these older generic drivers last, or if they show up any other issues.

Like everything else in my blog, these are intended as notes for me, how I resolved a problem I had, and I share these in case you have the same problems, They may not be as detailed as other posts and if you want to know more then drop me a line and I will do what I can.

This week, I had a problem on “my” laptop only, were I could not open FAX.TIF attachments received and forwarded to me by SBS2003, to add to the confusion I also receive faxes from a fax to email service from my ISP, these also arrive as .tif attachments, I could however open these external attachments.

I remember having this problem in outlook 2003 from time to time, and after a bit of googling I found the answer.

Open regedit and search for the following key

OutlookSecureTempFolder

Change the path from :

C:\Users\dflood.leos\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.Outlook\JSWA86CR\

to

C:\Users\dflood.leos\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temp\Content.Outlook\JSWA86CR\

Restart outlook and problem Solved

Your path may vary slightly, but you should get the idea.
